hotgirl, originating from Drogheda/Dublin, initially took shape as a solo endeavor by singer-songwriter Ashley Abbedeen, who introduced hotgirl's inaugural single 'Jam' in a lofi, trip-hop style on Soundcloud in July 2021. Seeking to expand into a full-fledged band, Abbedeen posted an Instagram call-out, catching the eye of guitarist Sophie Boxwell, who later successfully auditioned. Drummer Nick Stanley (known as Muttonhead) and bassist Jake Hurley (known as Local Boy) joined the fold after stumbling upon 'Jam' on Soundcloud. Originally intending to book hotgirl for one of their Burner Records showcases, they ended up filling in on drums and bass when the band found themselves in a bind. The band's connection grew through their shared passion for music and mutual disdain for the conventional scene.
Since the inclusion of her bandmates, hotgirl's music has transcended its modest lofi, DIY roots to embrace a full-bodied soundscape of discordant melody that now characterizes the band's sonic identity. Boxwell contributes angular lead lines, Hurley injects chromatic crunch on bass, and Stanley provides dynamic, punchy backbeats, culminating in hotgirl's unmistakable and individualistic sound that sets them apart.
Hotgirl unveiled their debut EP, "Sick Sad World," on December 1st, 2023, with singles from the release securing placements on Spotify's prominent playlists such as New Music Friday UK, Fresh Finds UK & IE, and All New Punk. The band has graced showcase stages across Ireland, including Ireland Music Week 2023, where they performed to an enthusiastic audience at the Grand Social, earning recognition as the #2 artist to see by The Goo. Additionally, they headlined the main venue at Whelan's Ones to Watch 2024. They've also secured coveted support slots alongside acts like Krooked Kings, Fraulein, and SPRINTS. Recently, they made their debut performance in London at The Windmill, Brixton.
